Why Masks For Vashon?
Masks For Vashon is made up of Islanders committed to supporting Islanders - residents, essential needs workforce, healthcare workers, nonprofits, and other businesses - with well made face masks on a donation basis.
The community on Vashon has a high risk population with 47% of residents over the age of 45, and 13.1% over the age of 65. There is no hospital or emergency service facility in Vashon to support the community. Vashon residents must travel via ferry or helicopter to Metro-Seattle or Metro-Tacoma.
Some Masks For Vashon members were early applicants of the Providence 100 Million Masks initiative, and the Facebook Group called Vashon Facemask Makers that made masks for Tacoma General Hospital staff, Vashon Community Care staff and patients, Vashon Care Closet, Visiting Angels, several Vashon resident nurses, and daycare workers watching the children of medical staff.
In an effort to help slow the spread of Covid-19 among the Vashon community, Masks For Vashon encourages residents to wear masks when in public.

Our Story
Masks used by local residents will help save lives by flattening the curve.
On the morning of March 31, three women of Vashon, WA almost simultaneously thought of the idea to bring together the community in a collective that would sew enough face masks for all islanders.
One called one. One called another. And the third called the first.
Then all three patched in on a call together.
In moments, out sprang the #MasksForVashon initiative. Its goal is to create 2 masks for each resident of Vashon, WA: 1 to wear and 1 to wash.
When residents leave their homes to perform essential errands supporting the needs of their families, mask-wearing becomes a positive and critical choice. Our goal is to ensure everyone has this option.
