All masks created through #MasksForVashon are made by dedicated and caring volunteer mask makers and distributed to the Vashon community for free.
Each mask is designed using various materials sourced through our supply chain and we strive to only use 100% tightly woven cotton.
Masks may also contain elastic or some kind of ties, and wire for nose shaping or stitching to perform that function.
All purchased or donated fabric used to create face masks is washed with organic detergent in hot water at SUDs laundromat.
After laundering, mask fabric is then dried and hand pressed to prepare it for pre-production to turn the fabric into mask kits.
Masks are hand cut from fabric that use various face mask patterns, so each mask is one of a kind.
Some mask makers are using the mask kits created by MasksForVashon. These are packaged in sets of 10. The kits are distributed several times weekly throughout the island to mask makers who complete the mask kits into finished masks.
Some mask makers are using their own materials of quality 100% cotton fabric for the face mask. These are picked up on a weekly basis using social distancing measures.
The completed masks are picked up from mask makers' homes or picked up at a central point. This is also where more fabric kits are distributed. The masks are then delivered to our central warehouse where the team fulfills orders that are distributed twice weekly across Vashon.
Mask makers uphold the cleanest working conditions while creating face masks.
We have no human contact during our deliveries and prearrange a designated delivery spot at each of our residents' homes or businesses.
We recommend you wash your mask in the hottest water available, and dry thoroughly before use. Since these are cotton, you may press them if you wish.
Your mask has been personally sewn for you. By one of your island neighbors. This mask may have been made from material that was meant to go into a quilt or other project. But it was donated to protect you from harm.
So please, during this time we are on restriction by our local government only go out when you absolutely have to, and when you do, wear your mask.
